Measure your body, not your gear
All measurements are body measurements in centimetres (cm). Do not add any extra room or "allowance": our pattern master adds what each piece needs. Don't measure a suit, jacket, glove or boot you already own.
You complete the full measurement form after you place your order. This guide shows how to take each measurement.
Before you start
- Use a soft (tailor's) tape measure marked in centimetres. If your tape only shows inches, multiply by 2.54 to get cm (for example 40 in = 101.6 cm).
- Ask someone to help. Measurements taken by a helper are usually more accurate.
- Measure while wearing the undergarments and protectors you normally wear under your suit. Stand straight and relaxed, feet slightly apart, and breathe normally.
- Keep the tape flat and level. It should touch the body all the way round without pressing in.
- Not sure about a measurement? Write it in the notes on your form. We check it with you before anything is made.
Racing suits
- Height: without shoes, standing against a wall, from the floor to the top of your head.
- Body weight: in kilograms (kg).
- Neck: around the base of the neck.
- Shoulder width: across the back, from one shoulder point (the outer edge of the shoulder bone) to the other.
- Chest: around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms, arms relaxed.
- Under-bust (only if you want a bust-shaped fit, most often chosen for women's suits): around the ribcage directly under the bust, tape level all the way round.
- Waist: around your natural waist (the narrowest part, usually just above the belly button).
- Hip / seat: around the fullest part of the seat.
- Sleeve length: hold your upper arm slightly forward and bend your elbow to about 90°. Measure from the shoulder point, over the outside of the bent elbow, down to the wrist bone.
- Bicep: around the fullest part of the upper arm, relaxed.
- Forearm: around the fullest part of the forearm.
- Wrist: around the wrist.
- Back length: from the nape of the neck (the bone at the base of the neck) down the spine to your natural waist.
- Front torso length: first mark your natural waist by tying a tape or string around it. Measure from the base of the neck at the centre front straight down to the marked natural waistline.
- Torso / trunk length: from the top of one shoulder, down the front, through the crotch and up the back to the same shoulder point.
- Outside leg: from the waist down the outside of the leg to the ankle.
- Inside leg (inseam): from the crotch down the inside of the leg to the ankle.
- Thigh: around the fullest part of the thigh.
- Knee: stand holding a support (a wall or chair back) and bend the knee to about 30°. Measure around the centre of the kneecap. Don't tighten the tape.
- Calf: around the fullest part of the calf.
- Ankle: around the narrowest part just above the ankle bone.
We also ask about your riding position, your fit preference, whether you want a bust-shaped fit, and what you wear under the suit. If you plan to wear anything under the suit, such as a vest or other equipment, tell us its brand, exact model and size (as printed on its label) and whether it's worn inside or outside the suit. We use this only to fit the pattern; it is not a statement about how the suit works with that equipment.
Optional for now: photos of you from the front, side and back in fitted clothing. We may ask for them later.
Leather jackets
- Height: without shoes.
- Body weight: in kg.
- Neck: around the base of the neck.
- Shoulder width: across the back, shoulder point to shoulder point.
- Chest: fullest part, arms relaxed.
- Under-bust (only if you want a bust-shaped fit, most often chosen for women's jackets): around the ribcage directly under the bust.
- Waist: natural waist.
- Hip: fullest part of the seat.
- Sleeve length: upper arm slightly forward, elbow bent to about 90°, from the shoulder point over the outside of the elbow to the wrist bone.
- Bicep: fullest part, relaxed.
- Forearm: fullest part.
- Wrist: around the wrist.
- Back length: nape of the neck to the natural waist.
- Requested jacket length: from the nape of the neck straight down the back to where you want the jacket to end.
We also ask about your fit preference, whether you want a bust-shaped fit, what you wear underneath, and whether you'll ride in it or wear it casually. If you plan to wear anything under the jacket, such as a vest or other equipment, tell us its brand, exact model and size (as printed on its label) and whether it's worn inside or outside the jacket. We use this only to fit the pattern; it is not a statement about how the jacket works with that equipment.
Optional for now: photos from the front, side and back. We may ask for them later.
Gloves
Measure both hands and label each measurement L (left) or R (right). Tell us which is your dominant hand.
- Knuckle circumference: hand flat, around the knuckles (the widest part of the palm), not including the thumb.
- Hand length: from the crease of the wrist to the tip of the middle finger.
- Wrist circumference: around the wrist.
- Forearm at cuff end: needed only for the gauntlet (long cuff) option, on both arms. Around the forearm where the gauntlet cuff will end.
- Finger lengths (thumb, index, middle, ring, little): only if we ask for them. Each from the base crease to the fingertip.
- Optional: hand tracing. Trace each hand on paper with the fingers slightly apart and photograph it from directly above with a ruler beside it.
We also ask which cuff style you'd like: short cuff or gauntlet (long cuff).
Boots
Measure both feet and legs, standing with your weight on the foot being measured.
- Foot length: from the back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe.
- Foot width: across the widest part of the ball of the foot.
- Ball girth: around the foot at the widest part of the ball.
- Instep girth: around the highest point of the instep.
- Ankle: around the narrowest part just above the ankle bone.
- Calf at the boot top: around the calf at the height where you want the boot to end.
- Boot-top height: from the floor up to the point where you measured the calf at the boot top.
- Fullest calf (only if the fullest part of your calf is below the boot top): measure around the fullest part, and its height from the floor, separately.
- Optional: preferred boot height, only if you want the boot to end somewhere other than the boot-top line you measured above: from the floor (heel) up to where you'd like the boot to end. If it's the same, leave it blank; we use your boot-top height and calf measurement.
- Optional: foot tracing on paper, photographed from above with a ruler beside it.
Your usual shoe size and brand are for reference only; your measurements take priority.
